COLLEGE OF BUSINESS
STEPHEN F. AUSTIN STATE UNIVERSITY
Originated: March 25, 1998
Overview
Faculty in the College of Business are encouraged to participate in activities that enhance their knowledge and skills with respect to both teaching and scholarly activity. Faculty development in the College of Business is supported by the university faculty development leave program, the college faculty development grant program, and various other means as described below. Research grant opportunities are described in the college document Faculty Awards and Grants.
Faculty Development Leave
University policy E-23A (Faculty Development Leaves) describes the faculty development leave program. It provides for a limited number of faculty to receive paid leave to engage in research, study, writing, or other approved development activities. Funding is usually for one-half pay for a full academic year or full pay for one long semester.
College Faculty Development Grants
Each year, the College of Business is provided with funds to be used for faculty development. Proposals are usually solicited in both the fall and the spring, and they are reviewed by a college committee. Funds are allocated primarily for development of teaching and related activities, but funding of scholarly presentations is also considered. Allocations are made by the dean using the committee's recommendations.
Other Development Opportunities
Each department has limited funds available for professional development, research, and travel. Activities are funded by the department chair according to merit and budget available. Scholarly presentations at regional and national conferences are often given priority for this type of funding. Departments also have limited staff assistance available for projects related to teaching or research. Capital budget funds (described in the Instructional Resources Process) may also be used to purchase equipment in support of teaching or research. In addition, the university and the College of Business sponsor guest speakers, video conferences, and workshops as opportunities and needs arise.
