COLLEGE OF BUSINESS
STEPHEN F. AUSTIN STATE UNIVERSITY
Originated: March 2, 1998
OVERVIEW
The admission process for undergraduate students in the College of Business is primarily administered through the University Admissions Office. However, the College of Business does participate in various recruiting activities as indicated below. Standards for admission of undergraduate students in the College of Business are the same as for admission to the university and are detailed in the General Bulletin.
Admission of College of Business graduate students is administered through both the University Graduate Office and the College of Business Dean's Office. Applications and supporting material are received in the Graduate Office and are forwarded to the College of Business Dean's Office when all material is assembled. The dean, in consultation with the appropriate program director, makes an admission decision for each applicant based on criteria published in the Graduate Bulletin. The applicant and the Graduate Office are notified of the outcome, and the Graduate Office then completes the matriculation process.
UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT RECRUITING
The University Admissions Office has established demographic and ethnic diversity as a goal incident to the admission process. Recruiting efforts include both activities that directly target diversity as well as more general efforts. The current primary activities are described in the following sections.
High School Visitation
Admissions Office personnel attend "college night" and "college fair" programs throughout Texas and Louisiana. Extra emphasis is placed on high schools that are in predominately minority areas. These programs are coordinated by state-wide organizations to enable colleges and universities to have representation at a majority of the programs held. Recruiters represent SFASU at an average of 35 programs per week over a 12 week period during the primary recruiting season.
Students occasionally accompany recruiters on these trips, and faculty members may be asked to assist if specialized academic information could help the recruiter at a particular school. College of Business brochures are available for use by these recruiters, and College of Business students have been used to assist in these efforts.
Special Minority Programs
Admissions Office personnel are conscious of special minority programs in Texas and have attended many of these. Programs attended include Project Turnaround, MEDELS Conference, Kwanzaa Fest, Access and Equity Program, National Hispanic Scholars Program, and Community College Minority Talent Search Program.
Telecommunications
Minority students representing the Multicultural Center call minority applicants to assist them in college selection.
Outreach Recruiting Programs
Students (second grade through twelfth grade) participate in on-campus programs and tours which are specifically designed for them.
Direct Mailings
The Admissions Office purchases list of names of high school seniors and contacts these students, concentrating on geographic areas where there are high minority populations.
Phone-a-Thon
Professors from the College of Business and other colleges on campus participate in recruiting efforts by telephone contact of prospective students. These "phone-a-thons" have been conducted each Spring Semester since 1995. Phone numbers are provided to each department by the University Admissions Office.
Showcase Saturday
Twice a year, the campus is opened to prospective students and their parents for this program. Faculty and administrators from the College of Business and other colleges on campus are available for promoting the various degree programs and answering questions.
Campus Tours
The Admissions Office sponsors campus tours for potential students and parents and will set up departmental appointments when the student expresses interest in a particular academic area.
University-Sponsored Programs
The university regularly recruits students for a variety of university-sponsored programs and activities. These include intercollegiate athletics, music programs, and fine arts programs.
Summer Programs
Each summer, the university hosts numerous programs and camps, mostly oriented toward high school students.
Off-Campus Recruiting Offices
Recent statistics indicate that SFASU students come primarily from East Texas, Houston, and Dallas. In July, 1997, a recruiting office was established in Houston. A similar office is planned to be established in Dallas in July 1998.
College of Business Mailings
The Admissions Office provides the College of Business with names and addresses of high school student prospects (juniors and seniors). Each prospect is sent an informational letter and brochure from the Dean's Office. If the student has indicated interest in a particular major, information on the major is also sent from the appropriate department.
Scholarships
Prospects with high ACT/SAT test scores are invited to apply for the University Scholars Program. This program currently provides $1,000 per year for up to four years to students based on academic achievement. In addition, students who rank in the top twenty percent of their high school graduating class currently receive scholarships of $300 to $1,000 per year for up to two years. Numerous other scholarships are available to College of Business students from the departments, the Dean's Office, and the Alumni Association.
University Interscholastic League (UIL)
Each year approximately 5,000 high school students visit the campus to participate in academic and athletic UIL competition.
Student Organizations
College of Business honor fraternities conduct recruitment activities in area public schools.
Fabulous Friday Program
College of Business faculty and faculty from other colleges on campus participate in this program, which brings elementary students on campus for a day of Acollege activities.@

GRADUATE STUDENT RECRUITING
Student Inquiries
Most recruiting for College of Business graduate programs consists of responding to student inquiries. Numerous independent agencies provide lists of MBA programs, and those agencies generate frequent inquiries from all around the globe. Many MBA students attend under employer sponsorship, and additional inquiries are generated by other employees in those organizations. All graduate programs (as well as undergraduate programs) are listed on the College of Business world-wide web site and some inquiries come from that source as well.
Visits to Other Schools
The University Graduate Office sends representatives to "career day" and similar events held both at SFASU and at other Texas colleges and universities. Information on graduate programs from the College of Business and other SFASU programs is made available during those visits. Special attention is given to institutions with predominant minority enrollment.
Publicity
The MBA program has been publicized in the university alumni magazine, in local newspapers, through the local Rotary chapter, and through direct contact with regional employers. It is a goal of the College of Business to improve the promotion of its graduate programs.
