MGT 580 - QUANTITATIVE MANAGEMENT APPLICATIONS

Catalog Description: - Quantitative techniques for decision making including linear programming, goal programming, integer programming, non-linear programming, transportation and assignment method programming, and network flow models.

Prerequisite(s): ECO 502 or equivalent

Course Objectives: Upon completion, the student should be able to recognize and solve selected management problems using quantitative techniques. In particular, the student should be able to logically analyze and integrate knowledge to solve problems in linear, goal, integer, non-linear, transportation method, and assignment method programming as well as network flow models. The student should be able to use both manual and computer solution techniques where applicable. The student should also be able to describe the circumstances under which each technique is applicable, and he or she should be able to define and use terminology associated with each technique. In addition, the student should be able to work as part of a team to investigate a quantitative subject and present the findings both orally and in writing.

Evaluation: Sufficient examinations should be given during a semester to provide a sound basis for the evaluation of student performance. Examinations should contain a mixture of objective questions and problems from text and lecture material that the instructor feels are relevant. The minimum number of exams will be a mid-term and a final. A term paper in which students describe a quantitative technique and/or its application will also be required. Computer applications should be integrated into each course, but the extent of use and grading weight will be left to the discretion of the instructor. Other types of evaluation such as library assignments, homework, and written assignments may be used at the instructor's discretion.
