Information on the Public Accountancy Act of 1999
Did you know...
The 1999 Public Accountancy Act requires 150 hours (5 years) of total
education to sit for the CPA exam.
SFASU has created a 5-year integrated degree program to address this
statute. This degree takes 156 hours and results in your receiving a BBA degree and
a Master of Professional Accountancy degree at the same time upon completion of the
program.
If you plan to be a CPA, you should be in the 5-year program.

General Degree Information
SFASU's five year integrated program leads to a Master of Professional Accountancy
degree for those who wish to pursue a career as a CPA. This program is one of several
fully integrated five year programs in the state of Texas. It contains 156 hours
of course credit and is designed to meet the changing needs of the profession as required
by the 1999 Public Accountancy Act. It complies with all the educational requirements for
those who wish to take the CPA exam.
The BBA/MPA program includes five years of study resulting in the simultaneous
awarding of the BBA and MPA degrees. The program includes the following...
- 48 hours of general undergraduate studies
- 39 hours of general undergraduate business courses
- 33 hours of undergraduate accounting courses
- 21 hours of graduate accounting courses
- 15 hours of general graduate courses
... for a total of 156 hours of coursework.
Additional degree requirements... For 500-level courses, no grade
below a C can be used to satisfy degree requirements.
To remain in good standing in graduate school, a student must maintain a 3.0 GPA.
To earn an MPA degree, a student must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on all
graduate-level work.

THIS IS A SUGGESTED COURSE OUTLINE.
*A student must apply for admission and be admitted to the MPA program and graduate school no later than the semester prior
to the first semester of enrolling in any 500-level courses. Example: If you plan to take your first 500-level course in spring
semester, you must have all paperwork completed and be admitted to MPA program and graduate school in the fall semester.
STUDENTS SHOULD CONSULT WITH AN ADVISOR BEFORE REGISTERING. PLEASE REFER TO BOTH THE GENERAL BULLETIN
AND GRADUATE BULLETIN FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION CONCERNING REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BBA/MPA DEGREE.
Admission
A student should meet the following:
GRADUATE ADMISSIONS:
Receive clear admission to the MPA program. Requirements for admission are:
- a) completion of at least 75 hours (including all 100/200 level courses plus a minimum of 15 hours of accounting)
- b) cumulative GPA of 2.5
- c) 2.5 accounting GPA, C or better in all accounting courses completed at the time of admission and maintain a C or better in all accounting courses.
Prior to enrolling in any 500-level course, a student must have been admitted to
the Five-Year Program and have been admitted to the graduate school.
Admission to the graduate school requires acceptable scores on the GMAT with GPA
as follows:
- Overall undergraduate GPA * 200 + GMAT score must be equal to or greater
than 950, OR
- Upper level GPA * 200 + GMAT score must be equal to or greater than 1000.
Students are advised to take the GMAT no later than early in their first semester senior year.
